ive seen several topics that seem to be performed at least three hundred times in a competition.

so were shouldn't competitiors go with their topic.

Presentation is what matters most to me.  If you use a so-called “over-used” topic but your presentation is great, than who cares?  (Presentation meaning both writing of the speech and performance).

Being happy doesn’t mean that everything’s perfect; it just means you’ve decided to see beyond the imperfections.

Amen! I'm so tired of hearing about people using worn out pieces or having the same topic as everyone else in speech.
If the performance is good and they perform their material in a creative, interesting way that revives the piece – then why not?

ok

so as long as the topic is performed with passion it does not matter the topic.

Not just passion, perse(sp?).  Some passion ends up with anger, and that's not always helpful.  Just do it and do it to the best of your ability.  If it's a fresh, new way, the judge will appriciate that.  Chances are, if you're performing it because you like it, your speech won't be the identical as anyone who did the same topic before you, and it will seem “new.”

Personally, I love when a judge says something like, “You took an over-used topic/selection and made it your own.”  That's high praise.

The way I see oratory (and I guess most speaking events) is if you choose a cliché, overdone topic — you have to give it your own spin.  Throw some originality on to it and make it your own.

I did this with my oratory last year — overdone topic on “first impressions” and how they aren't accurate and such.  One judge slammed me for using the topic (I don't think he listened to my speech cause that was the only reason why he gave me a 6 so I didn't break out of my room at Emory; another story..) but the other two judges on that panel were glad I had a refreshing view on the topic.  I came up with a whole different sort of solution — and even switched the topic around from focusing on first impressions to becoming reflective of ourselves.

It's the way you present it — and how you present it.  You can teach an old oratory topic new tricks.

Give up on yourself and you give up on the world. The world ends with you!

While many topics are often “overdone”, its really the content that matters. If you can take an old theme and make it original, power to you.

Billy, are we the only people on the team doing informative at CNC Gatlinburg?  I think that's really funny if we are.  But mine is on a “worn out” topic, as well.  But who uses Barbie transitions?  Oh, right, just me.  =P
