Hey:
I've heard some rumors going around that some leagues are allowing Digital Devices to store extemp files on.
My league (so far) hasn't confirmed this, but does anyone know if this is true?? If so, what type of devices?

I see you're from PA: At the 2008 State Tournament, the Executive Committee decided that the use of laptops would be permitted for all events (but only at the State Tournament). In addition, the UPenn Liberty Bell Classic has previously allowed laptops, to avoid high travel/flight costs for flying with bins. So to answer your question, yes, some leagues and tournaments are allowing the use of laptops.

Also, for the past 2 years TOC Extemp has allowed a laptop to be used. Personally though I prefer to use paper sources because it forces you to actually read the articles. If you have everything on your computer you will become lazy by the end of the year and stop reading articles and start searching for key terms in the articles. This will eventually cost you valuable time when finding sources because instead of knowing where to look, you will first have to search for the article and then read what you need for your speech. Therefore, while it is moreconvenient to carry around a laptop, paper files are definitely worth the effort of pushing/carrying tubs around.

For the second straight year, the FSU Gregg Phifer Invitational will allow electronic files. Dom is certainly right in that they avoid travel costs for carrying along tubs to tournaments. As long as extemp prep rooms are monitored properly, and wireless internet access is turned off, the advantages of allowing electronic files greatly outweigh the negatives.
