I am glad to say i will be joining the dark side.
i currently have a D.I. cut for next year. the problem im encountering while working on it is building characters that arent funny. is there a large different in the way you build characters for D.I. than H.I.?
Are the same body forms appropriate?

I think the body-forms depend on the style of your piece. For example, Nathan McGhee's are somewhat HI-like, but his cutting also allows for that more so than Abby Christophel's piece does; hers are much more.
I don't know if you've seen Jenny's piece, but if you have, you can see where the quickness of HI pops would benefit her piece. My transition is much slower, though I also have only one pop and two stances.
It all depends on the piece and the style you're going for; at least that's how I see it.

DI styles are crazy different. If you're use to HI…don't afraid to have tech in your DI(not too much tho) - it gives it a bit of a boost.
Character wise, it was really hard to change from HI to DI for me….and I probably have too much HI-ness in my DI. I pop, and my energy is probably too much. But try to make your characters real in DI, unlike most HI's in our area. Concentrate on what your character is feeling (even when they're not talking) and saying. To get into the shoes of my character I wrote down the exact thoughts and why my character said what they're saying, blah blah blah. It helps a lot.

ill have a lot of work to do before i decide to do this di. Nathan thanks alot for the advise, for some one who has sucessfully made the transition from HI to Di it means a lot to me to get your advice. i tend to perform with alot of energy so ill have to tone it down a tone.

Nathan, I think that your cutting/piece really allows for you to use your HI skills effectively. (Mainly because your cutting is so good.) Billy, if you ever get the chance to watch Nathan perform, you'll see how he used toned-down HI-pops in the correct way for a DI.
All I can say, Billy, is to watch, watch, watch some DIs. The more you see and mentally critique, the more you'll learn about how you'd like to perform yours.

Billy, if your coach has any of the nationals tapes, look to them. Every character has to be your own and has to realistically fit the piece, or else you will look like you're acting. and the best actors don't act, they be.

wow you sound like my coach. lol.
i guess ill have to start prepare myself for this piece by watching those around me. build off what i like and scratch what i dont like and define these characters myself. i might try writing the paragraph on my characters.

A good way to familiarize yourself with how a character lives is to do a “line by line.” You take a piece of paper (or type it) and you take every line of your piece and analyze it. There are many different ways, but my favorite is to make a grid with “emotions” “subtext” and “history” and then with every line say what emotions the character is feeling are, what the subtext of the line is, and what the backstory/emotional recall of the character is for that particular line.

Yeah, they're quite an undertaking, but if you do them right they can be extremely beneficial. I do them for all of my pieces.
