The season is coming and I think now would be a good time to discuss good tactics for recruiting people. Mainly I think we should discuss such tactics cause I don't know any, all I know my team does for recuitng, is a call out meeting…that's it. So what do you guys do when trying to recruit? What works? What doesn't work? Let us know!

I have bad typing, deal with it .

Recruiting really depends on the school, rep, and size of the team.
For big schools who already have big teams, it's more likely that kids will have friends or family members compete, and be more willing to do so. Those schools don't need much in the way of effort in recruiting.
Smaller schools, however, may face a problem. New teams can have an easier time if the school is more of a theater-focused one, as the two seem to interest the same students- but school's truly new to forensics, and acting in general may have to do many things.
What my duo partner (Matt Cairns) and I did twice was have our coach call a meeting of the entire Junior High, and we did our duo, and I did some of my impressions afterwards. The kids laughed a lot and had a good time, and those interested in acting or just being funny were more inclined to check it out.
Also, sometimes the best thing is to scout the middle school. Smart kids- extemp, fun kids-interp, mean girls-debate. (kiddingalmost) By scouting kids, you can talk to them, and by talking to them you let them know you and your team is interested. Sometimes it just feels good to be wanted.
After getting a few gems, the team will easily grow into the powerhouse that was my first example.
Hope this helps, if now- tear it apart and make your own methods, I'M NOT A PIECE OF MEAT!

Now that’s the problem with open immigration

I coach at a smaller school. I agree with the above statement completely, though sometimes you don't really have a middle school to scout at. If that's the case, you have to grab the kids within the first couple of weeks of school while they're still looking to find what extracurricular activities they want to participate in. Have announcements over the loud speaker if possible. My best bet though is going and having a new members meeting advertised by Posters around the school. Mine usually entail a big, fun slogan along with a picture in the middle and at the bottom a “Join Forensics Speech” or “Join Forensics Debate” followed by the date in which the meeting is.

Good Slogans (pictures should be self-explanatory – or you should be able to use your own creativity):

- “Zach Efron did it – SO SHOULD YOU!”

- “In God We Trust – All Others We Cross-examine”

- “Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler, Oprah… and YOU [insert picture here]” – a picture of each person

- “Like Big Trophies?”

- “Wanna Be like James Earl Jones aka DARTH VADAR?”

- “Suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder?”

- “Debate Your Parents – And WIN”

- “Ever Sit on the Can and Make Random Noises Just to Pass the Time?”

- “Wanna Break Out of Your Shell?”

- “Learn How to Get Out of Any Situation”

- “Like Talking to Walls?”

- “Be WICKED like Idina Menzel” – yes, apparently Idina did do forensics! Just found it out like a week ago. haha

Just be creative and have fun with it. Once you're at the meeting, be engaging and do an HI/Duo and then the teasers of other events.

Watch out using the word “Forensics” around people not yet in the activity. I've run into a lot of problems in the past when students don't realize that Forensics is not just CSI dead body research. I highly recommend staying with the phrase “Speech & Debate” to simplify your selling point.

Make it simple and appeal to peoples lesser nature. Mention scholarship opportunities, acting, and debate. Also taking teams to middle schools and putting on performances of your top breakers tends to catch the attention of those who have natural need to be successful.

To die will be any awfully big adventure

“Debate Your Parents – And WIN”

my personal favorite.  =)

Being happy doesn’t mean that everything’s perfect; it just means you’ve decided to see beyond the imperfections.

at my school we dont really need a bigger debate team, except for the interp half. there are less than 10 kids who regularly do speech events, and over 70 debaters. our interp captain tried putting flyers up around the school, but this was in December. by then most people had chosen their extracurrics. he thought newbies could come in and go to the last fewe tournaments of the season. i knew it wouldnt work. we had absolutely no success with the flyers, and even if people had come, they would have needed some time to adjust to the forensics enviroment.

i suggest no flyers, especially in the midle of the season. if you want to recruit, try it at the beginning of the scghool year.
